Take payments with Square

Let clients pay invoices, pay links and proposal deposits through Square by card or Google Pay, and choose Square or Stripe for each invoice.

Once Square is connected, clients can pay you through Square from the pages you already send: invoices, pay links and proposal deposits. They pay on a secure page marked Secured by Square, and the money goes to your Square account.

Before you start

  • Connect Square and finish Set up Square.
  • If Stripe is connected too, decide which one is the Default for new payments.

Where clients pay with Square

  • Invoices: the client opens the invoice and pays with the amount shown on the button, for example Pay $250.00.
  • Pay links: a pay link you send opens the same Square payment page.
  • Proposal deposits: when a proposal asks for a deposit, the client pays it with Pay the deposit after accepting.

How clients can pay

  • Credit and debit cards.
  • Google Pay.

Gift cards and Cash App Pay aren't accepted on these pages. A client who tries a gift card sees Gift cards can't be used here. Use a debit or credit card. If the card's bank asks for extra verification, the bank's check opens on top of the payment page, and the payment finishes when the client completes it.

Choose Square or Stripe for one invoice

When both are connected, an invoice can use a different provider from your default:

  1. Open the invoice or recurring plan.
  2. Under Pay with, choose Default (it names your default, for example Default (Stripe)) or the other provider.

When you send it, the send menu shows which provider the client pays with. Autopay on recurring plans always charges a saved Stripe card.

After a payment

The payment shows on the invoice like any other online payment, and the invoice is marked paid when the full amount is in.
